Camping | Texas | Hemphill | Texas RV Parks | RV Sites in Sabine National Forest | RV Camping near Lake Toledo Bend | East Texas RV Parks | RV Parks along Texas Highway 21

We started a nearly 6 week camping trip and made our first stop in the city of Hemphill located in east Texas. Our first planned sightseeing stop was in Natchez, Mississippi, so we searched east Texas RV Parks along Texas Highway 21 for a midway stopping point.

If you're planning to head east or west along Louisiana Highway 6 or Texas Highway 21 with your RV, this post will give you an idea of what to expect during a stay at Byrd's Nest RV Park. The information in this post is also relevant for anyone searching for RV sites in Sabine National Forest as well as RV camping near Lake Toledo Bend. One of the biggest benefits that the park has to offer is its convenient location.

Byrd's Nest RV Park sits in in the midst of the Sabine National Forest just one mile from the western Louisiana border.

In addition to a small number of RV sites not occupied by permanent or long term RVers, Byrd's Nest RV Park also offers several motel rooms plus some cabins available for nightly or weekly rentals.

Those traveling with kids might like the on-site playground as well as the wildlife roaming about. During our short stay, we saw some turkeys, geese, ducks, swans and turtles. I'm guessing that, had the weather been less wet, we probably would have also seen birds feeding from the bird feeder.

Byrd's Nest RV Park has a number of covered boat slips available for rent. In addition to the RV park's private boat launch ($5.00 per launch fee), there is a free public boat ramp with low-water lake access near the park entrance. There's even an onsite bait and tackle shop for any last minute needs before heading out into the lake.

The fact that Lake Toledo Bend is quite popular with both Texan and Louisianan anglers was very apparent during our stay - even with the less than stellar weather. On the morning of our departure, at least ten trucks (many with Louisiana license plates) had already launched their towed boats from the public ramp before 9:00 AM. (We also found it interesting that a friend of ours from Utah met up at the lake with a group from around the country for a week of fishing the week before our stay.)

For registered guests lucky enough to not just go fishing but to also do some fish catching, the park has a fish cleaning station to make dinner prep a little easier.

Our assigned site was located within viewing of what we believe to be the advertised "covered area with an outdoor kitchen and plenty of room for dancing available for special events". As we didn't have a need, we didn't inquire about availability, however in our opinion, it doesn't appear to have been used for its intended purpose in quite some time. The kitchen appliances do not seem to be in working order and the covered area was filled with various equipment and other junk.

Situated on Lake Toledo Bend and in the midst of the beautiful trees of the Sabine National Forest, the area is quite photographic. Although the weather was rainy, the clouds helped to provide us with some nice sunsets.

The total cost for our two-night stay was $70.00 including all taxes. Although the roads throughout the park are definitely in need of some repair, the need was certainly magnified during the heavy rain experienced during our stay. Even so, we would definitely consider returning to Byrd's Nest RV Park if we needed a stopping point in the vicinity.

Campsite Amenities at Byrd's Nest RV Park

Reservations for a stay at Byrd's Nest RV Park can be requested by calling (409) 625-1901 or online through RoverPass. All sites are assigned by the RV park. For those requesting reservations by phone, no deposit is required and reservation confirmations are verbal. All online reservations (including a non-refundable booking fee for those without a RoverPass membership) must be paid in full at the time reservations are made.

Check-in for sites is completed at the office located in the back of the park. Our experience with the folks running Byrd's Nest RV Park could not have been more positive. Both the gentleman who we spoke to on the phone when requesting a reservation and the lady who checked us in were super friendly.

While the entrances into individual sites can be difficult to distinguish from one another due to the layout of the park, the park staff will lead you straight to your site once you're fully registered and paid. We were assigned Site 5, a relatively flat pull-through site for our two night stay.

The gravel site was mostly covered with grass but included full hook-ups including 50-amp electric, water and sewer. The single large tree on site 5 was in a location which would provide limited shade, however since it rained nearly non-stop during our entire stay, the clouds above shaded our site!

The site was litter free upon our arrival. Amenities at the site included an uncovered moveable plastic picnic table and a BBQ grill.

We had no issues making calls or using the internet as our cell and data service through both Verizon and T-Mobile was good in the area. Byrd's Nest RV Park also has WiFi (with a good signal) available for guests. We found some broadcast television stations and, although the park advertises satellite TV, the satellite dish at our site was broken during our stay so we didn't have the opportunity to check it out.

Favorite Campsites at Byrd's Nest RV Park

Although the weather was uncooperative during the majority of our stay, we did walk around the park several times (gotta get those steps in) in our quest to find our favorite sites. With a high percentage of sites filled with long term or permanent residents, the remaining sites were all fairly similar and we therefore would not recommend one site over any others.

Campground Ratings

Immediately upon purchasing our RV in the summer of 2017, we started a log to track all of the places where we have camped. In addition to the city and state, we include the number of nights we stayed as well as the total and average daily price that we paid along with our comments. We also rate each site so that we can more easily remember if it's a place that we'd like to return to. We even include additional comments about the location submitted from our readers. To see the constantly growing list, check out our post titled Wordy Explorers Campground Ratings.
