We made a rather last minute plan to spend a week near Phoenix, Arizona to visit with family. Our search for campgrounds or RV parks in southeast Arizona to help break up the drive from Austin, Texas led us to Willcox. Since we have a Passport America membership, we made a reservation at Ft. Willcox RV Park. The park's location offered us great convenience since we were just passing through the area.
If you'll be traveling east or west and hoping to find RV parks for I-10 travelers, don't miss this post. For anyone interested in camping near the Chiricahua Monument, you've also come to the right place! In addition to reading about the amenities offered, you'll find photos allowing you to get a glimpse of the park before making a reservation. While we only stayed for a single night, we learned that the park also has both permanent residents as well as many guests who stay for more extended periods of time.

Campground Amenities at Fort Willcox RV Park
Ft. Willcox RV Park, a community for 50+ year old guests, is located just one mile east of I-10 in the city of Willcox in southeast Arizona. Other than sites occupied by long term residents, the majority of the sites were empty during our one night early autumn stay. (A resident that greeted us shortly after our arrival commented that the park does not get busy until late October.)In addition to those wishing to explore the Chiricahua Monument and Mountains, Willcox is popular with wine enthusiasts due to the many nearby vineyards. The near empty park with its desert surroundings made for a peaceful afternoon and evening.
While not a large park in comparison to many others, there are 10 spaces which appear to be geared for short term or seasonal campers. The park was clean and litter free upon our arrival. Both dumpsters and trash cans are located in several places around the campground area.

Amenities at the park include single sex restrooms and a laundry room.
In addition to a toilet and sink, each restroom is also equipped with an accessible shower stall. The shower is priced at $0.50 per 6 minutes of water use. (Although we've only been RVing for a few years, I do think that seeing a "pay by the minute" shower was a first for us!)
Both washers and dryers are priced at $1.25 per load. Signage in the laundry room indicates that wash loads run for about 30 minutes and dryers for 45 minutes.
A covered gazebo located on a concrete pad with a nearby grill is centrally located within the park. This shared facility is home to a two person chair swing, two picnic tables and a large movable table with chairs (similar to an elementary school cafeteria table). While the two picnic tables appear to be quite new, both the swing and concrete pad have definitely seen better days!
The total cost for our one night stay with a Passport America discount was $23.33. According to signage on the office door, campers who arrive after the office is closed and stay for one night are charged $25.00 (cash or check only) including any and all discounts. By pre-reserving our stay, it appears that we really only saved $1.67. The other benefit was having Larry, responsible for customer service at the park, chat with us and open the office to accept our payment by credit card. As our stay was not during the months of January through June, we weren't able to try out the advertised complimentary morning waffles and fresh coffee offered on a by reservation only basis. We learned that the popular homemade fruit pies for sale in the office would be available in the coming weeks - so no pies for us either!

Campsite Amenities at Fort Willcox RV Park
Sites are available at Ft. Willcox RV Park for single or multiple days. Reservations can be made by calling the park directly (520-384-4986) or sites can be requested on line via Rover Pass. We made our one night reservation via phone. As promised, we received our site assignment via text prior to our arrival. We were not required to make any advance payment and our reservation confirmation was verbal only (no follow-up e-mail).The majority of the park is rock/gravel with all sites being clean and appearing to be quite level. We were assigned Site 27, a pull-through site. One feature that we really appreciated was the "big rig friendly" length of the sites. We had hopes of keeping our trailer connected to our tow vehicle during our overnight stay, and it worked out beautifully.
Our premium site had 30-/50-amp electric, on-site water and sewer as well as cable television. A few select sites (ours included) also had a hose rack close by.
Although we had no trees near our site, we did have an uncovered wooden picnic table which came in handy for outdoor cooking and eating breakfast before our departure! (There are no grills at individual campsites.)
We had good phone and data service with both of our providers, Verizon and T-Mobile. Ft. Willcox RV Park also offered very reliable password protected wi-fi which we put to good use during our stay. The number of channels available via cable were limited (16) and no "all day news channel" was included in the line-up.

Favorite Campsites at Fort Willcox RV Park
During our stay, sites 22 - 31 were available for short term guests. Each of these sites has full-hook-ups and were quite similar to one another. (We did notice that Site 30 was a bit narrower than other sites within the range.)While Site 31 did get shaded a little earlier in the afternoon, it was closer to the road and therefore campers would potentially hear more road noise.
