Camping | Mississippi | Vicksburg | Mississippi RV Parks | Mississippi Campgrounds | RV Parks in Vicksburg | RV Sites near Downtown Vicksburg | RV Parks on the Historic River Road

After departing from Natchez, we drove less than 70 miles to Vicksburg to get to the second of our Mississippi RV Parks where we had reservations. Although day trips are easy between the two cities, with so many sites to see in each we preferred camping nearby. We were very pleased with our selection of River Town Campground as it provided spacious RV sites near Downtown Vicksburg.

If you're plans have you in search of Mississippi campgrounds or RV Parks in Vicksburg, this post will give you an idea of what to expect during a stay at River Town Campground. In addition to being an RV Park on the historic River Road, the amenities make for a very enjoyable stay.

Campground Amenities at River Town Campground

River Town Campground has a total of 107 reservable campsites. During our mid April stay, a high percentage of sites were occupied by long term RVers. After visiting with both neighbors as well as the office staff, we learned that many were employed at one of several nearby construction projects. A number of the RVs were occupied only during the week as their occupants returned home most weekends.

The campground was very clean upon our arrival as well as during our walks throughout the grounds. I'm guessing that garbage pick-up between 7:00 AM and 12:00 Noon daily at each campsite (plus a dumpster near the office) helped to ensure the campground's cleanliness.

The large clean bathhouse has separate toilet stalls and shower / changing rooms. The bathhouse doubles as the tornado shelter for the campground. As severe rain was predicted during our three night stay, the woman who checked us in ensured that we were aware of tornado procedures should they become necessary.

Although River Town Campground does have a laundry room, we were still in the early stages of our nearly 8 week road trip so we weren't yet ready to wash clothes. Open 24 hours daily, the laundry room also has a book exchange for those searching for their next great read.

The price for washing machines ranged from $1.00 to $1.75 per load. The first 42 minutes of drying time was $1.50 (each additional 7 minutes was priced at $0.25). We did receive the recommendation from a neighbor to only wash small loads as the water fill level of the washing machines is rather low.

Laundry detergent (pods) and quarters (plus ice, stamps and other necessities) are available at the office during open hours. There's also a Walmart less than 10 minutes from the campground for other grocery or household needs that you may have during your stay.

Located in the city limits of Vicksburg, River Town Campground is conveniently located to all that the city offers for those desiring to explore new destinations. Both the Vicksburg National Military Park and Vicksburg's historic downtown are a short drive away. If you want to see if Lady Luck is on your side, there's even some nearby casinos. For those with more time, Mississippi's capital city of Jackson is less than an hour away and the drive to Natchez takes just over an hour.

Those young at heart or traveling with children can even enjoy some fun right at RiverTown Campground. The park has both a playground and a seasonal salt water swimming pool.

If your fur baby will be accompanying you while traveling, the RV park welcomes pets and even has two pet walking areas.

Those traveling with a group or hoping to celebrate a special event will be pleased to know that River Town Campground has space. An on-site reservable Group Meeting Building with a full kitchen is available for reservations. On one afternoon during our stay, the pavilion was being used for a baby shower.

Should you be running low on propane during your stay, it's easy to purchase a refill from the on-site tank at River Town Campground. Additionally, anyone in need of RV repairs will be pleased to know that the park can recommend a nearby repair company who will come to you. The word on the street (from one of our neighbors) was that the company is awesome and they would definitely use them again.

River Town Campground offers discounts to retired and active duty military, seniors over age 65, camping clubs and AAA. The total cost for our three night stay with a AAA discount was $73.83 including all taxes and fees ($24.61 daily). Upon check-in, we were advised of the new rates ($31.00 per night; $28.00 with discount) - only so that we would not be surprised if we scheduled a future stay.

Campsite Amenities at River Town Campground

Reservations can be requested by phone (601-630-9995), fax (601-636-8127) or by email (RT5900A@att.net). No deposit was required for our reservation made by phone about three months in advance. We received verbal confirmation for our stay and our site was assigned upon our arrival.

Of the 107 reservable RV sites, 48 are back-in and 59 are pull-through. All sites are 45 feet wide and have a nice grassed-in space on both sides making them more spacious than at many other similar RV parks. Sites are either 75 or 80 feet long and all have full hook-ups including 20-, 30- and 50-amp electric, water, sewer and daily at-site trash pick-up. River Town Campground also welcomes those traveling with tents!

We were assigned pull-through Site 82 on Musket Drive. The site was clean and had a level gravel pad. Although we had no shade tree, all utilities worked as expected and we had an uncovered wooden picnic table. There are no grills, fire pits, etc. at sites within the park.

We had good phone and data service through Verizon, one of our cell phone providers. Unfortunately however, we had no service at all through T-Mobile, our other provider. There were some broadcast television stations available for viewing while at the campground.

River Town Campground does offer free Wi-Fi to guests. Should you be counting on using Wi-Fi during your stay, be sure to request a site near one of the three routers. We were unable to connect to any of the available access points from the site that we were assigned (Musket Drive Site 82). We did learn that the internet service within the park was scheduled for an upgrade shortly after our stay, so hopefully connectivity won't be an issue going forward.

Favorite Campsites at River Town Campground

Although sites at River Town Campground are assigned upon arrival, we still walked the entire park to find our favorite sites. Our preferred sites are those further away from the road near the campground entrance in order to limit road noise. We found that all sites in the center of the campground are quite similar with pull-through parking, a level gravel pad facing in the same direction and each with full hook-ups. The main difference that we noted is the size and placement of a nearby tree which will provide afternoon shade. If we have the opportunity to return to the campground:
  • Pull-through Sites 58, 67, 83 or 98 would be our top four choices;
  • Back-in Site 12 is also well shaded in the afternoon and located on the far side of the campground; and
  • Site 84 located on River Town Loop also has a nice shade tree. The downside to the site is that the entrance door to most RVs opens toward the main loop around the park. Depending on the amount of movement within the park, road noise could be an issue.
As the more recently planted trees in RiverTown Campground continue to grow, the number of sites making our favorites list will continue to grow as well!

Escaping the Tornado in the Forecast

Keeping in mind that no one should ever stay in an RV during a tornado warning or violent wind storm, we did all that we could to escape the tornado that was expected to hit Vicksburg during our stay. Knowing that one should always seek stable shelter, we opted to act differently than the stars in the movie Twister. Although we knew that River Town Campground was prepared with a tornado shelter, we decided to leave "RV There Yet?" parked at the campground and head away from the path of the storm.

After making a couple of stops to check multiple weather apps on our phones, we found ourselves about 20 miles away from the park. Since the rain was still pounding down and we hadn't yet eaten dinner, we drove another 15 miles to the Old Country Store in Lorman, Mississippi. The buffet restaurant is famous for fried chicken and made our "escape from the tornado" well worth the drive!

After making our return drive to Vicksburg, we were happy to see that, other than some standing water, the campground did not appear to have any storm damage. Unfortunately some of the nearby area did not fare as well, but hopefully can fully recover in a short amount of time.
