Camping | Oklahoma | Sulphur | Review of The Point Campground | Chickasaw National Recreation Area | Lake of the Arbuckles

Just ten days after purchasing "RV There Yet?", Scott and I left on a "trial" adventure. As new RV owners still trying to learn the ins and outs of RV travel, we planned to pull "RV There Yet?" on a trip to visit Scott's family in the Kansas City, MO area. While we often do the drive in one 12 hour day, we extended the journey to three shorter days with two nights to enjoy the comfort and convenience of our new home away from home.

We planned to be away for 10 days, and in addition to staying at 3 different campgrounds, we also wanted to park in a highway service plaza for at least one evening. Our goal was to try to get comfortable enough to sleep in a roadside plaza where we would not have the benefit of air conditioning or the added space that extending our slides provides. We'll see how that goes!

Preparation for Our First RV Trip

We spent the last 5 days continuing to customize the RV for our lifestyle. In addition to Scott installing both a sewer hose storage tube and a rear view (back-up) camera, we shopped, shopped and shopped some more! Although there are still some more items we'd like to have, we feel that we now have all of the basics ... and then some.

We had most things we planned to take with us in the car or RV before bed time the evening before leaving home. After a quick breakfast at home, we loaded the final items from our packing list, hooked the RV up to our Expedition, confirmed that all lights were working and drove off at about 8:30 AM.

Amenities at The Point Campground

In just under 6 1/2 hours we arrived at The Point Campground in Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Since we had already reserved and paid the $22.00 fee for one night, we were able to drive straight to our campsite, passing up the self-pay station at the campground entrance.

The Point Campground was very well maintained - the public areas that we took a closer look at including restrooms, showers and a small amphitheater were all in excellent condition. There was a central dump station as well as dumpsters. We were quite impressed with the Volunteer Park Host who came to personally urge us to retract our awnings and notify us of an anticipated storm expected to bring 60 mph winds and hail within the hour. (Seriously? We didn't even get a chance to enjoy our awnings which we had extended for the first time!)

Although we did not have the opportunity to enjoy any of the available recreational options during our short stay, by being located on Lake of the Arbuckles there were opportunities to boat, fish and swim. The trail in the park is multi- use providing the option to bike, hike or even ride a horse. There are apparently a variety of plants and animals that also make exploring the park enjoyable.

Campsites at The Point Campground

With campsites in both an upper and lower loop, the only reservable sites (i.e. not offered on a first come-first serve basis) were located in the Upper Loop - 12 sites with water and electric (50- and 30-amp) and 9 tent only sites. The combination of primitive tent sites and RV sites with electric and water hook-ups were all clean with paved parking (either at the site or designated parking very nearby). Parking was easy on flat paved RV sites. (The first real test of the back-up camera received a thumbs up from Scott as it definitely made it easier to back in to our reserved site.)

Each site had a picnic area including a picnic table, fire pit with grill and lantern hook located on gravel, thereby avoiding mud following rain. We were pleased with the assortment of stations available on broadcast television and our Sprint cell phone reception was good, however our data service was quite slow.

Due to the location of the trees surrounding the campsites, most sites had limited shade. The same was true for campsite 53 (our site), however we did have some trees that we would have been able to use for hanging our hammocks (had the weather not prevented it).

Final Unpacking Before "The Storm"

Although we did get some rain, luckily the campground avoided the hail and heavy winds - Scott and I even got out for a preliminary walk of the campsite loop in hopes of selecting our favorite sites (something we want to do at every campground). The real rain (heavy, but again not severe) began after our walk and ended just before bedtime.

Favorite Campsites at The Point Campground

As we didn't need to leave until the early afternoon, we had time for a leisurely breakfast and another walk around the campground - this time taking good notes of campsites that we would be interested in reserving for a future visit.

It appeared that none of the true waterfront sites accommodated an RV, however we agreed that campsite 22 (which had electric and water hookups) had the best view of and also access to Lake of the Arbuckles. While scouting out potential future RV campsites, we also noted that sites 49 and 50 seemed to have the best shade.

Dump Station at The Point Campground

After our walk, it was time to shower and prepare to leave - which was actually quite simple since we stayed connected to our tow vehicle overnight. (We had no need for the car during our one night stay and we saved time when ready to depart.). We did experience two other firsts on this trip which included the opportunity to try out our new sewage hose storage tube as well as to tow "RV There Yet?" to a dump station to dump.

Camping in Oklahoma

Our first experience camping in our RV in the state of Oklahoma was a great one, and we would definitely return to The Point Campground. If you have camped in Oklahoma, what are your favorite campgrounds, and why do you like them?
