Camping | Hiking | Arkansas | Fayetteville | RVing in Fayetteville | Where to Stay in RV near Fayetteville | Review of Fayetteville RV Park | Camping in Fayetteville

While in route from our Austin, Texas home to the Kansas City, Missouri area to visit family, we made a one night stop in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Without unhitching "RV There Yet?" from our Expedition, we had time to explore the RV park and get a little exercise in the nearby neighborhood.

If you are in search of a place to stay in the Fayetteville area while traveling in your RV, take a look at this post. Southgate RV Park is advertised as being the "only RV park within the city limits that accommodates overnights".

With a total of 47 RV sites (27 pull-through), Southgate RV Park is located in the heart of Fayetteville (2331 S. School Ave.) just minutes away from the University of Arkansas. The RV park sits on a large tract of land with about half devoted to RV sites and the remaining half (about 5 acres) is a grassed in area for pets, kids and adults to enjoy. While most of the green area is wide open, there are a couple of gazebo covered picnic tables located on the end nearest the RV sites.

The park is clean and well maintained and has an onsite caretaker (Jerry) available to take reservations, answer questions, assign sites, etc. For guests arriving when Jerry is not in the office, registration materials and an information packet are located at the front door to the main office. Instructions indicate that guests should find an open pull-through site for their stay and place rent along with a completed registration form in the box at the same front door.

The park offers coded men's and women's bathhouses, each with a small laundry facility priced at $3.50 per washer load and $2.00 per dryer load. Guests place trash in a dumpster located near the office for pick-up. Other than the large green space open for the use and enjoyment of guests, there are no recreation-type amenities in the park. There is, however, a nearby hiking trail within the city of Fayetteville which visitors can take advantage of.

Our one night stay came at a total cost of $35.00 including tax. RVers choosing to use 30-amp electric service pay $32.00 nightly, and discounts for both are available for longer stays. Reduced rates are also offered to active duty military and Good Sam's members.

Campsite Amenities at Southgate RV Park

All sites at Southgate RV Park are level with packed gravel parking areas. For power, guests have the choice of either 30- or 50-amp electric service at each site. Additionally, each has on-site sewer as well as water with a hose rack to keep your hose off of the ground. (Guests are advised to use a pressure regulator/reducer when connecting water due to the high pressure in the park.) Other than utilities, individual campsites have no additional amenities.

Although an online reservation system is not available, sites can be reserved in advance by contacting Jerry at (479) 442-2021. RVers can contact Jerry while in route to the park (before 2:00 PM) for advance notice of their site assignment. No deposit is required for advance reservations, and full payment in either cash or check is due upon arrival.

We called Jerry when we were on our way to the park and he informed us that our home for the evening was site 26. During our call, Jerry let us know that we would find all that we needed at the main office front door in case he had to step away. When we arrived, Jerry was in the office and made our check-in process very quick and easy. Within just a few minutes we had provided the information that he needed, paid the $35.00 in cash for our one night stay and we were headed to our site.

Although none of the sites in the park have "hammock trees", site 26 was clean and had all promised utilities with very easy pull-through parking and a nearby shade tree.

We had good cell phone and data service from both Verizon and T-Mobile, our two service providers. There was a limited selection of broadcast television stations available in the park. Although the RV park advertises free wi-fi, we could never connect from site 26 during our stay.

Favorite Campsites at Southgate RV Park

After walking through the park with our Southgate RV Park map in hand, we agreed that all pull-through sites at the RV park are comparable to one another. Due to the long length of the parking space and proximity to the bath houses / laundry facilities, the 6 pull-throughs in the middle section are our favorites (18, 19, 21, 25, 25A and 26). The remaining pull-through sites are all very similar so as long as the site length accommodates our RV, we would be happy with any one of them.

Hiking at Southgate RV Park

Although there are no hiking trails at the park, Jerry did provide us with a Fayetteville Trails and Bikeways Guide with information and a map of trails in the area. Although we had limited time in the evening, we did venture out to find the trail nearest to the park. As the section of the trail closest to the park is a shared use paved trail through an adjacent neighborhood, we didn't walk a long distance due to the setting sun.
