Destinations | Hawaii | Kauai | Tour | Hiking | Monastery | Snorkeling | Outrigger Canoe | Waterfalls

Reflecting back on our arrival to Kauai, I remember thinking that seven days would be longer than I had ever stayed in one hotel while on vacation. Now that Kauai is a not so distant memory, I realized that seven days was not long enough, so I started a list for our upcoming return - whenever that may be.

If you have plans to visit the island of Kauai and want to do some pre-planning (and maybe a tad bit of research), read on for some of the tours and activities that we either didn't know about before our arrival, didn't have time for, or had uncooperative weather on the day when we planned to visit. You may find an idea or two for your visit.

Hindu Monastery

Before our next visit to the island , I hope to make a reservation to participate in one of the free two hour guided tours of the Hindu Monastery offered once weekly throughout most of the year. I believe that the tour would be very interesting - plus joining a guided tour is the only way to see the nearby under construction Iraivan Temple.

Upper Ho'opi'i Falls

During our visit to Upper Ho'opi'i Falls, we had the opportunity to stand on a nearby ledge and watch people swimming and jumping into the pool. I want to return with my swimsuit, towel and chair to join in on the fun - or at least to join those lounging on towels and relaxing in beach chairs.

Kalalau Trail

While I don't have the desire to hike the entire 11 mile (one way) hike along Kalalau Trail, I would like to complete the four mile round trip hike to Hanakapi'ai Beach (or maybe even the additional two miles to get out to Hanakapi'ai Falls and then back again).

Snorkel at Ke'e Beach

As the weather took a turn for the worse while we were near Ke'e Beach, we didn't have an opportunity to join the snorkelers in the reef protected water. Since it is one of the recommended lifeguards beaches, it's on my list for our next visit.

Inflatable Raft/Boat Tour of Na Pali Coast

This will require some research, but we know that we want to add to our past helicopter and sailboat experiences of seeing this beautiful coast. We now want the opportunity to get up close and personal with the cliffs on either a raft or a boat small enough to explore some of the sea caves . . . and maybe even have time for some snorkeling on the side!

Secret Falls

Departing from Kamokila Hawaiian Village, I want to paddle down the Wailua River in an Outrigger Canoe to the trailhead for the hike to Secret Falls (and time permitting, possibly make an additional stop at King & Queen's Bath).

Kaholalele Falls

If we have access to an off road vehicle, I'd like to try once again to get to Kaholalele Falls (GPS: 22.055386, -159.394058) in eastern Kauai since our attempt this week was unsuccessful. We had headed out in our rental car using our favorite GPS app for traveling, maps.me. The route planner estimated total travel time of 35 minutes and, despite traffic which delayed our anticipated arrival time, all was going fine on the well traveled and paved roads of Kauai. With about four miles to go, we turned on to an unpaved road reminiscent of one that we drove on earlier during our trip. Scott expertly navigated around the numerous potholes (some filled with so much water that we had no idea of their depth) and across an underwater low water crossing bridge until we got to a point in the road where uphill travel on an even muddier road was required. According to maps.me, the distance to Kaholalele Falls had started increasing rather than decreasing, so we took the worsening road conditions as a sign to turn around and head back to our hotel. As usual, Scott was able to safely navigate our return with the rental car all in one piece (albeit quite dirty), however our experience made me (and maybe even Scott) really want to try again!

It seems as if the more time that I spend someplace while on vacation, the more time I have to find even more to see on future visits. A hui hou, Kauai (Until We Meet Again, Kauai)!

Dining in Kauai

If you are planning your upcoming trip to Kauai, be sure to take a few minutes to read our post titled "Reviews: Kauai Eats - Mostly on the Cheap" for some budget friendly restaurants that we enjoyed during our week on the island.

Activities on the island of Kauai

If you could make a recommendation to a friend or family member for only one "must do" tour or activity for their visit to Kauai, what would it be and why?
