After a morning dinosaur hunt, it was still early in the day so we made one more stop before heading home. Veterans Memorial Park (another place we have never taken the opportunity to see) was located just a short distance west of US-183 at 2525 New Hope Drive in Cedar Park Texas.

If you live in or are visiting the north Austin, Texas area, a visit to this park is a fun and completely free way to honor our veterans. Read on for some ideas for an enjoyable way to spend a little (or a lot) of your day. The best news is that your visit can be fun for adults and kids ... and even dogs.

Cedar Park Veterans Memorial

We began our walk in The Cedar Park Veterans Memorial along the pathway of bricks engraved with the names and service dates of soldiers.

A garden of bronze leaves surrounds the pathway which leads up to Memorial Hill, the site of a larger than life monument.

The Cedar Park Veterans Memorial was unveiled in November 2011 and honors past, present and future veterans. The bronze soldier towering over the base is the likeness of U. S. Army Specialist First Class Matthew Morris of Cedar Park, who was killed on April 6, 2008 and was awarded the rank of Sergeant (as well as the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart) after his death.

The six laser enscribed granite panels at the base of the monument honor the branches of the U. S. Military - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Merchant Marines and Coast Guard. Laser art on the obelisk includes mothers kissing their military children as they depart for, or return from, their deployment. There are also some Texas references in the laser art including the George H.W. Bush Aircraft Carrier in the Navy panel and a B-1 Bomber stationed at Abilene's Dyes Air Force Base in the Air Force panel.

Lined up on one side of the monument are six concrete scrolls, each displaying a bronze seal of one of the branches of the military.

Cedar Park Veterans Memorial Park

Although we didn't walk through the entire park, in addition to basketball and tennis courts plus sports practice fields, the park is home to a large aquatic pool with something for everyone in the family to enjoy including a water playscape, lap lanes, a dive platform and a slide. There's also a five acre dog park with a pond, showers, water fountains and even a separate area for smaller dogs. For planned activities, there are pavilions, a large group pavilion and an amphitheater - all available for rent.
