South Dakota | Custer | Keystone | Hill City | Black Hills | Mount Rushmore | Black Hills Central Railroad | Battle Creek | 1880 Train | Steam Train
Operations of the 1880 Train, the oldest continuously operating tourist train in the United States, started
in 1957. The ride aboard the train between the cities of Keystone and Hill City is a 20-mile round trip
journey. Today's route mirrors that traveled over 100 years ago by Chicago, Burlington & Quincy. The
original route followed along Battle Creek in order to service the mines and mills between the two cities.
Landmarks along the way include the remains of some of the original mining sites.

Do you ever wonder what it would have been like to live over a hundred years ago?
Riding the 1880 Train through the Black Hills of South Dakota in July gave us just a taste of what
transportation may have been like. We boarded the steam train in Keystone, just a few miles away from
Mount Rushmore. Our 10 mile, one-hour long ride on the rails took us to Hill City. Rather than
immediately returning, we spent several hours exploring (and eating dinner).
What recommendations do you have for others interested in getting a glimpse at living in the late 1800s?
What you've done becomes the judge of what you're going to do — especially in other people's minds. When you're traveling, you are what you are right there and then. People don't have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road. - William Least Heat Moon
