Meet Me at the Midpoint of the Appalachian Trail

From Georgia to Maine, about 3,000 of the most dedicated of hikers hit the almost 2,200 mile long Appalachian Trail each year. The trail crosses through 14 states and is the longest hiking-only trail in the entire world. Completed in 1937, the trail is managed by the National Park Service in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (staffed by volunteers) and others. The Conservancy is headquartered in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Are you a hiker?

We've been purposely avoiding long hikes so that Scott's knee can fully recover. We still thought it would be fun to take a photo at what is often referred to as the "psychological halfway point" of the Appalachian Trail, so we probably did a little more than we should have!

What started as a photo op turned in to so much more. When we arrived at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, we met a group of hikers in the midst of their cross-country hike. It was so cool to talk to them about how long they had been hiking, how they plan and their experiences along the way. (We also lucked out when a hiker transport driver offered to drive us a short distance so Scott didn't have to walk as far!)

What's the longest hike you've ever taken?
