Hungary | Budapest | Buda | Pest | Danube River | Szechenyi Bridge | Chain Bridge | Suspension Bridge | History | World War II
The Danube River flows between two Hungarian cities, "Buda" and "Pest" which, in 1873, formed the combined city known today as Budapest. Of the suspension bridges over the Danube in Budapest, the oldest and most revered is the Szechenyi Bridge (named for its builder) which is more commonly known as the Chain Bridge. The bridge was constructed over a 20 year period and was later destroyed during World War II. A newly constructed bridge opened on the 100th anniversary of the original opening date.

While still exploring the "Pest" side of Budapest, we crossed part-way across the Danube on the city's most famous bridge.
Fun fact: Before the Chain Bridge was completed in 1849, there were only two ways to cross between the Buda and Pest sides of the River (by boat or by foot which was only possible during winter when the river was frozen)!
