Stations of the Cross at El Convento de La Popa

Sitting high atop a hill in Cartagena, Colombia is El Convento de La Popa. Getting to this highest point in the city requires an uphill ride along a road with several switchbacks. While getting there may seem a little stressful, the reward from the top is an awesome view overlooking the city.

When traveling by cruise ship, have you seen the guides who are selling their tours to disembarking passengers?

Having been to Cartagena several times previously, our plan in 2018 was to take a taxi to explore one area of the city on our own. As in most ports that we've visited, there were guides selling tours to passengers as they were leaving the ship. We had never done this before, but the price was good (cheaper than the taxi ride) and we would see more than just one small area. The day turned out to be much better than we ever expected!

We started with a drive to El Convento de La Popa - an uphill drive along a road with several switchbacks. Approaching the convent, we passed several crosses lining the roadside. Near the top we saw a cross with the number 13 and realized that the crosses represented the Stations of the Cross. The largest of the crosses (number 14), along with the monastery, sat at the top of the hill. A 10 minute stop gave us just enough time to enjoy the beautiful views of the city plus take a peek at the entrance to El Convento de La Popa.

Would you ever consider going on a city tour like this one?
