Unexpected Dolphin Show aboard Island Packers Ferry

A ferry operated by Island Packers Cruises takes visitors from Ventura, California to Santa Cruz Island and other islands within Channel Islands National Park. The journey from shore to shore goes through a section of the Pacific Ocean that is known for significant marine life. It has even been said by some that there are "more marine mammals in (these) waters than any other area on the planet"! If you're lucky, you will see at least see some seals lounging about and if your timing is perfect, you may even see hundreds of dolphins performing a "free show" just for you and your boat mates!

Social Media Description

Have you ever unexpectedly seen dolphins in the ocean?

Our one hour ferry ride out to Santa Cruz Island was fun, but nothing exceptional. We did see a group of seals huddled together on a buoy, but that's reasonably common.

Our return, however, was quite extraordinary. We saw dolphins ... and not just a few dolphins. We likely saw hundreds of dolphins (way too many to count). The dolphins were blowing air, surfacing, swimming, riding the wake of the ferry and even jumping! The "performance", in an area named the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, actually lasted more than 10 minutes.

Where have you enjoyed an unexpected surprise like this one?
