El Morro: On the Lookout for Air and Water Attacks

Located at the entrance to the Bay of San Juan in Puerto Rico, construction of the Castillo San Felipe del Morro began in the late 1530s. No other countries were able to triumph when attacking the Spanish-built fortress for nearly 400 years. It wasn't until 1898 and the Spanish-American war that El Morro became outdated. Improvements were later made and El Morro was used as a military base for the USA during both World Wars.

Have you traveled to Puerto Rico?

In addition to visiting the island on cruise vacations, we also spent a week exploring Puerto Rico in 2016. We love exploring the walled city of Old San Juan. Although we usually like to see new places, we even toured the Castillo San Felipe del Morro (El Morro) on two different stays in Old San Juan. The history of the fortress is interesting, and who couldn't fall in love with the view of the beautiful blue Caribbean waters?

What are your favorite places to explore on the island of Puerto Rico?
