Keystone: The Heart of Mining in South Dakota

Keystone, South Dakota is known as the tourist town nearest Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Due to the city's location, it became the heart of mining within the Black Hills in the late 1800s. As more and more people moved west, Keystone eventually became the largest town in the county. In addition to the influx of miners, some of the town's residents were able to gain employment with the carving of Mount Rushmore.

Social Media Description

Have you visited Keystone, South Dakota?

While on vacation, it seems as if there is never enough time to thoroughly explore every city, and Keystone was no exception for us! For us, Keystone was the starting point for our ride aboard the 1880 Train. Other than a walk along Winter Street, the main road, we didn't have time to see much of Keystone. Sure wish we had the time to learn more about the sculptor and the "blasting" that took place to create Mount Rushmore at Rushmore Borglum Story or to tour the mine and museum and maybe even pan for gold at Big Thunder Gold Mine.

What's your favorite thing to see or do in Keystone?
