Now That's What You Call a Mammoth Cave!

Not just for cave enthusiasts, outdoor lovers can bike, hike and even paddle through Mammoth Cave National Park. Located in south-central Kentucky, it is the caves, however, that have been bringing most visitors to the park. It's actually estimated that the cave system has been luring people inside for over 4,000 years! In addition to being a National Park, Mammoth Cave has the distinction of also being a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve.

Do you enjoy exploring caves?

After almost 2 1/2 weeks in Missouri, we headed east to Kentucky. Since our travel has been limited to "local" destinations for the last year, we set a goal of exploring as many (new to us) national parks as possible. Mammoth Cave was one that neither of us had visited.

The only way to go inside the cave is on a tour ... and due to current circumstances, the only tour available was the self-guided Extended Historic Tour. We lucked out as Ranger Jerry was stationed inside and he shared so much history from the generations of his family who worked as tour guides.

Fun fact: Over 400 miles of the Mammoth Cave have been explored to date and it is still unknown how many miles are left unexplored!

Of the caves that you have explored, which was most memorable?
