Do you like to walk across bridges?
While exploring New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, we learned so much about the bridge that
spans the New River. I feel confident that the reason why the New River Gorge Bridge ranks as one of the
state's most photographed places is due to some of the options for the most adventurous of travelers.
Each October the bridge is open for walkers to cross the bridge on the third Saturday. Most who choose to
walk do so in order to watch some adventurous feats. Daredevils can either do a parachute jump from the
bridge into the gorge (876 feet) or rappel from the catwalk that is 25 feet below the driving lanes.
On an almost daily basis, the catwalk is open for guided tours. The Bridge Walk allows people to walk the
3,000+ feet across the 2-foot wide catwalk while securely fastened to a safety cable.
Fun fact: Because of its popularity, the bridge was chosen to represent West Virginia during the 50 State
Quarters Program.
