Three must try tastes during a visit to Porto and surrounding cities: (1) A Francesinha is a layered sandwich served on toasted bread with meats and sausages in between. The bread is covered with melted cheese and a sauce of beer and tomatoes. The sandwich is often quite large and can be shared! (2) Pastéis de nata" or "Pastels de Nata" (flaky pastry filled with custard) is a traditional Portuguese dessert offered in most bakeries. (3) The neighboring city of Guimaraes is famous for crescent-shaped pastries filled with sugar, egg yolks, ground almonds and squash. You may be surprised, but it is a yummy dessert!
