Do you prefer wide waterfalls or tall waterfalls?
We both love all waterfalls, but if forced to choose between wide or tall, we would probably choose tall.
The highest drop at Sandstone Falls measures about 25 feet (with some areas only measuring 10 feet),
but the waterfall is 1,500 feet across!
Depending on where you are in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, getting to the waterfall
is part of the fun. We started at the Sandstone Visitor Center and drove south to the town of Hinton
where we crossed the river and then drove back north to the waterfall. Fortunately much of the drive is
right alongside the river and is very scenic. Once at the parking area, the walk to the waterfall viewpoint
is only about 0.25 miles long on a boardwalk path.
Had it not been raining, we probably would have also hiked the 1/2 mile Island Loop Trail which loops
around one of the islands on the bottom level of the waterfall.
