El Santuario de Chimayo, a National Historic Landmark, is a popular stop along the High Road to Taos. The sanctuary is the most important pilgrimage destination during Holy Week in the United States. The present day building dates back to the early 1800s and, because of the magical healing soil inside a small prayer room, is often visited by people who believe that eating the soil or applying it on a sore area on the body will cure their afflictions or those of their loved ones.
