When you visit a lake, do you prefer to get in the water or just watch?
We only saw 3 of the 5 lakes in Custer State Park - each both beautiful and unique. Legion Lake
was built by the American Legion in the early 1930s and became a part of the state park in 1937.
In addition to a variety of water sports (boating, fishing, personal watercraft, swimming, etc.), the
area is perfect for overnight stays as well. The Legion Lake Lodge fronts up to the lake and there's
a nearby campground with tent and electric only RV sites.
Sylvan Lake is often referred to as the park's "crown jewel". Of the 3 lakes that we saw, it was by
far the most crowded. People seem to flock to the lake during the summer to relax on the sand or
rocks or participate in more active water sports. We saw swimmers, floaters, fisherfolk, canoers,
kayakers and even people ignoring the rules and jumping into the water from the rocks. There's a
1-mile loop trail that's both accessible and also popular with rock climbers! Parts of National
Treasure: Book of Secrets starring Nicholas Cage were actually filmed near the lake and on the
trail. (In addition to nearby camping, the park's newest and nicest lodge is at Sylvan Lake.)
The last of the lakes that we saw was Stockade Lake near Gordon Stockade, one of the park's
historic sites. This lake was the least crowded during our visit, but we did see 2 people fishing.
What would you have done if you were at a lake inside Custer State Park?
