Hungary | Budapest | Pest | Jewish Quarter | Szimpla Kert | Ruin Bar | Nightclub | Pub | Eclectic | Music | Craft Beer | Cocktails | Party
Szimpla Kert is credited for being the first of a number of "Ruin Bars" found in Budapest's Jewish Quarter. Damaged during World War II and abandoned for years, these structures were reimagined and today are popular with both locals and visitors. Day or night, a visit to one of these unique venues is an opportunity to enjoy a drink (or meal) surrounded by eclectic decor including second (or third) hand furnishings, graffiti, electronics and more from years gone by.

Although we don't typically go bar hopping when traveling, when I heard about the "Ruin Bars" in Budapest, I knew I had to visit one. We chose Szimpla Kert, recognized as the oldest of the ruins that have been converted into eclectic bars!
The pleasure we derive from journeys is perhaps dependent more on the mindset with which we travel than on the destination we travel to. - Alain de Botto
