The Native American community of Taos Pueblo is located in the valley below the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. While some have moved outside of the village walls, there are still members of the Taos Indian community that live in the multi-story adobe homes owned by their family for as many as 1000 years. Taos Pueblo is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark.

We made a last minute change to our plan when we learned that no tours would be offered (and no photos allowed) at Taos Pueblo due to a one-day festival. So glad we waited a day so we could learn the history and more during a guided tour.
Fun fact: Most members of Taos Pueblo occupy their Pueblo homes only during ceremonies. They live in modern homes with electricity and running water outside the walls of the village as neither are allowed within Pueblo walls.
In a cool solitude of trees, where leaves and birds a music spin, mind that was weary is at ease, new rhythms in the soul begin. - William Kean Seymour
