As we didn't find a shore excursion that peaked our excitement, we planned to join our friends, Terry and Dwayne, on a morning port shopping expedition followed by a taxi ride to a nearby beach where we'd spend our afternoon.
If you enjoy shopping for bargains of all kinds and your Western Caribbean cruise docks in Falmouth, Jamaica, get off of your cruise ship - even if only for an hour or two!

Shopping at the Port of Falmouth, Jamaica
Upon our arrival in Falmouth, the weather was cloudy, so we were happy with our decision - spending our morning shopping would allow time for the clouds to move away so that we could enjoy afternoon sunshine on the beach. We were all quite pleased with our shopping experience at the port shops in Falmouth as the area felt safe and the vendors were all very pleasant (even when we didn't make a purchase) - unlike our shopping experience at the International Pier Mall in Cozumel. There was a good variety of shops plus a covered market in the port area including jewelry, duty free (perfume, liquor, cigarettes, etc.), sunglasses, gifts (wood carved animals and furniture, woven straw baskets, etc.) and apparel (t-shirts, dresses, hats, etc.). Although Scott and I had really just planned to browse, based on the willingness of nearly all of the vendors to bargain, I unexpectedly ended up buying two dresses. Our friends, who had planned on making some purchases, found even more than they anticipated as well including some beautiful carved wood pieces. (The only negative as compared to our shopping experience in Cozumel was the lack of free internet.)
In addition to the retail shopping, the port was home to several restaurants including Dairy Queen, Quiznos, Nathan's Famous and Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville and was also the launching point for a trolley tour of the historic town.
Periodically throughout our stay, we enjoyed the street dancing and rhythms provided by the locals.
The on and off rain showers made us rethink our plan to spend the afternoon at the beach ... in other words, the rain kept us shopping into the early afternoon when we finally decided to return to our ship for some lunch and to to enjoy some relaxation in a hot tub before retreating to our cabins to review our purchases. Although the high winds prevented Rhythm Explosion, the band providing poolside music on our ship, from playing, we still enjoyed watching the sunset as we sailed away!
The warm and friendly people of Jamaica truly made our day an enjoyable one - even with the intermittent rain showers!
