My uncle and cousin planned to join us to watch the Super Bowl, so we filled our limited time with a quick trip to the Pittock Mansion one of the recommended area sights that Scott discovered while researching Portland, Oregon.
If you are visiting the Portland area and have a spare hour, don't miss the free panoramic views of the city. If you have even more time, read on for some additional options.

Pittock Mansion
The Pittock Mansion, located at 3229 NW Pittock Drive, was just a couple miles west of downtown Portland. Georgiana and Henry Pittock commissioned the design and development of the home in 1909, and sadly only lived to enjoy it for a few years. Family descendants lived in the mansion for almost 40 more years until a grandson put the house up for sale in 1958. The City of Portland purchased it in 1964 and following a 15 month restoration project, the mansion opened for visitors in 1965 and has been a memorial to the contributions made to the city by the Pittock family ever since. We walked around the mansion to enjoy the panoramic views of the Portland skyline.
In addition to being surrounded by well manicured gardens, the back of the property on which the mansion sat was left in a more natural state for hiking.
From kids running around and playing with huge bubbles to adults flying a drone, there were many others enjoying the grounds during our visit on this super bowl Sunday afternoon.

Tips for a Visit to the Pittock Mansion
- If you have a choice, make your visit on a day with clear skies for views of the five surrounding mountains - Mount Adams, Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Mount Rainer and Mount St. Helens.
- On a beautiful day, consider bringing a picnic lunch to eat while enjoying the views and the fun on the grounds.
- If you have the time and enjoy hiking, check out the Pittock Mansion Hike, a 5 mile round trip hike between the mansion and Lower Maclean Park Trailhead. (This hike is actually part of the 30 mile Wildwood Trail through Forest Park.)
- Although we didn't have the time to devote, a tour including the mansion, the gate lodge and the grounds is something to consider - I hope to join a tour on a future visit. At $11.00 per adult, visitors have the option of an approximately 60 minute self-guided tour or a 50 minute volunteer led mansion only tour (confirm availability at 503-823-3624).
