Utah | Escalante | Escalante Petrified Forest State Park | Petrified Forest Trail | Hiking | Camping | Petrified Wood
The city of Escalante was named for the surrounding plateaus which appear to "escalate", much like stair steps. In 1976, Escalante Petrified Forest State Park was opened for the public to explore the forest. About 15 years later, a visitor center was added to showcase some of the petrified wood, petrified dinosaur bones, shell fossils and more. A relatively easy one-mile trail winds past thousands of pieces of petrified wood. Don't miss the 50 foot petrified tree near the trailhead!

Had fun hiking along the one-mile loop reading our trail guide as we went along. So many pieces of petrified wood in the state park - each with a theory about its age, location, etc.
