Custer's General Custer Buffalo

Custer State Park is known for having a large herd of free-roaming buffalo. It just makes sense that the nearby city of Custer would also have buffalo. The painted buffalo sculptures can be found in front of businesses throughout the city. It's fun to wander the downtown streets trying to find all of the painted buffalo.

Social Media Description

Have you seen painted sculptures on the streets of cities that you have visited?

Since the city of Custer was named after General Custer, it's no surprise that a bison painted with the likeness of the General stands at the Visitor Center. Many of the other buffalo sculptures that adorn the streets in downtown Custer are owned by a local resident.

Each year, the buffalo are lent to the city and placed on the streets for all to enjoy. The timing perfectly coincides with the sculptures arriving downtown in late May just as peak tourist season begins. Just after the late September Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park, the buffalo sculptures return to their home.

What cities have you visited where painted sculptures can be found on the streets?
