Not sure how to spend a day while docked at the Port of Funchal on the island of Madeira? There's a variety of tours offered both by cruise lines and local tour companies. You can easily rent a car and explore on your own - but don't fool yourself as the island is larger than it seems. You won't be able to circle the entire island, but you can choose a quarter of the island and head out. Once you've visited a few times, you may want to just explore Funchal on foot. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the city where you'll find a promenade and town to explore.

I can't even remember how many of our five previous transatlantic cruises spent port days in Funchal, Madeira. We'd done many of the touristy things that the island is known for, so on our most recent stop we just got some outdoor exercise. We walked from the port to the city, along the promenade and into town before heading back to port!
