Do you enjoy visiting sites with a focus on women?
During a visit to the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, we learned that there was a First Ladies
National Historic Site not too far away. We had some time, so we hit the road to see a place that we
didn't even realize existed!
We spent most of our time exploring the visitor center. After seeing replicas of dresses worn to various
events by many of the First Ladies, we learned a lot about the lives of Ida Saxton-McKinley and President
McKinley, both whose hometowns were Canton, Ohio.
Fun fact: There have been more first ladies than presidents! Female relatives or friends have sometimes
been called upon to perform the traditional responsibilities of the first lady. This has happened when the
wife of a president was unable (or unwilling) to fulfill the role and also when the president was a bachelor
or widower.
