Reflections of Minneapolis' Foshay Tower

In addition to building several utility empires in the early 1900s, Wilbur Foshay, built the Foshay Tower in downtown Minneapolis. For nearly 50 years, the building was the tallest structure in the Midwest. Today, the tower is home to the hotel, W Minneapolis - The Foshay. The hotel's 30th floor is devoted to a museum that tells the story of the tower and its namesake. There's also an Observation Deck on the floor above the museum.

Do you enjoy exploring the downtown areas of cities?

We spent our final day in Minnesota exploring Minneapolis. We explored the mill district and tried to walk through the downtown skyway system which, unfortunately, is mostly closed on weekends. We did make it to the top of Foshay Tower.

The tower is said to have been built to resemble the Washington Monument. Seeing photos from the building's 1920s construction and reading stories about Wilbur Foshay, the builder, was interesting. But the icing on the cake was walking up the stairs for a view of Minneapolis from above.

Not so fun fact: Less than 2 months after the building's grand opening, the 1929 stock market crash caused the builder to become bankrupt and unable to meet his obligations for construction of the tower.

What is your favorite thing to do in the downtown area of a city?
