Colorado | Montrose | Gunnison River | Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park | Gunnison Diversion Dam
Although technology was limited, construction of a tunnel that would allow vehicles to get from the top of the canyon to the canyon floor began in 1904. Following an accident in 1905, the use of jackhammers and dynamite helped improve the work speed and reduce injuries. It was in 1909 when the tunnel was completed, but the entire project including the diversion dam wasn't finished for another thirteen years (1922).

Social Media Description
When driving to the south entrance at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, we noticed a road off to the right. We asked some questions and learned that the road was paved and would take us to the bottom of the canyon, so we drove down the winding road before leaving the park!
