Markham Park Hiker Warning: Stay Alert

No matter where you are in the more rural parts of Florida (and even not so rural), you may come across an alligator. Inside Markham Park, you should definitely be on the lookout when you are near water. Whether it's the lake or the State Road 84 canal (New River Canal), you might be surprised at what you see!

What reptiles would you be happy to see when hiking?

Our days in south Florida are coming to an end. We will soon be heading up toward the Florida panhandle. Before leaving, we are trying to explore as much of Markham Park (our home away from home) as we can before heading north.

We had heard that you can sometimes see alligators in the park, but we had no success - until today that is. We hiked the nature trail out toward the canal. Just as we were approaching the water, we saw a baby alligator swimming. Keeping our distance, we watched the alligator find a place to rest.

Do you enjoy spotting reptiles when out hiking?
