Exploring Utah's Monument Valley Back Country

A 17 mile mostly dirt road begins at the Monument Valley entrance and passes the visitor center complex. Valley Drive then leads toward the distant red cliffs. There's a variety of tour options available to take visitors further into the backcountry, but some famous points can be seen from a personal vehicle. The 11 recommended stops on a DIY driving tour include John Ford Point - where people like John Wayne came to film so many of their great westerns!

Are you a fan of westerns?

Dating back to the 1930's, the Navajo Nation's Monument Valley (located in both Arizona and Utah) has been the setting for many famous westerns. During one of our 2018 RV journeys, we explored Monument Valley - both on a private Navajo jeep tour and driving the Valley Loop on our own. We had fun making some silly photos in the backcountry!

We camped at Goulding's RV Park - just across the street. The campground is home to John Wayne Cabin, a cool museum that honors John Wayne and the many movies filmed in the area.

What are some of your favorite westerns?
