Meet Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello Plantation

Construction began on Monticello in 1768, four years before Thomas Jefferson married and over 30 years before being elected as the third president of the United States. He continued expanding the home and making updates and modifications throughout the remainder of his life. Today, visitors to the plantation can tour parts of the home's interior as well as the expansive grounds and even the cemetery where Jefferson is buried.

Social Media Description

Have you ever met a former (or current) president?

When we realized that we were staying less than an hour away from Monticello, we planned a day trip to explore the plantation featured on the back of the nickel. What we didn't know was that we would actually get to meet the former president himself. (The role of Jefferson was actually played by an actor-interpreter. If you didn't know that Jefferson had passed away nearly 200 years ago, he probably could have convinced you that he was the real deal!)

Fun fact: Monticello has been recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the only private home in the country with a UNESCO designation.

Which president would you like to meet (or have you already met)?
