New Mexico has five trout hatcheries within the state, including the Red River Trout Hatchery located about 20 miles outside of Taos near Questa. Construction began in 1941 and today, the hatchery is the biggest in the state with more trout produced in Red River than in the state's four other hatcheries combined. (The Red River Fish Hatchery currently has the capability of hatching nearly two million fish at one time in the 89 ponds plus 26 "raceways".)

We are not big anglers (or even small anglers!), so a stop at a fish hatchery is not a stop that we commonly make. Since the Red River Fish Hatchery was just a short distance off of the road, we decided to check it out. Interesting!
