There's So Much to See at Crazy Horse Memorial

"Sculpting" Crazy Horse Memorial began in 1948 so the "blasting" has been in progress for more than 70 years already! The over 87 foot tall face of the leader of the Oglala Lakota was completed in June 1998. Once the entire sculpture is complete, the carving will be 563 feet tall, the largest mountain carving in the world. Currently, the focus is on the 263 foot long left arm as well the mane and 22 story tall head of the horse.

Have you visited the Crazy Horse Memorial?

Although we had heard that there was a lot to see and do, we were still surprised at how much time we actually needed there to see most of the displays. The outdoor art certainly caught our eye as we approached the Welcome Center. The orientation film set the stage for our visit and introduced us to sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski. A 1/34 scale model helped us visualize what the completed carving will look like.

Walking through the museums filled with donated North American Indian art and artifacts took a lot of time, but it was the Mountain Carving Gallery, Sculptor's Home and Studio and Sculptor's Workshop that we really enjoyed. Getting just a glimpse into the life history of Korczak (the sculptor) and his wife Ruth Ziolkowski was intriguing.

We splurged and spent the additional $4.00 for the rustic bus ride to the base. Since our visit was during peak season, we got to see both Hoop Dancer Starr Chief Eagle perform and "Legends in Light", the nighttime laser light show projected on the mountainside.

What was your favorite thing to see or do at Crazy Horse Memorial?
