Climbing the Dune Succession Trail Deserves a Beach Break!

Indiana Dunes National Park's West Beach offers a variety for those who can't decide between a beach break or dune hiking. (Unfortunately, it was sand mining nearly a hundred years ago that created the flat areas.) The perfect start to enjoying West Beach is by hiking the one-mile long Dune Succession Trail including its nearly 300 stairs. After soaking in the view from the top, head straight for the beach to relax, swim, build a sand castle or whatever your heart desires!

Do you enjoy walking / hiking on sand?

After a day exploring the surrounding area away from Indiana Dunes National Park, we returned for more beach time, plus some hiking. The Dune Succession Trail at the park's West Beach was a great way to get our heart pumping. Completing the trail required hiking on both sand and pavement plus climbing stairs. We lucked out with a clear day, so we had a nice view from the top of both Lake Michigan and, in the distance, the city of Chicago. Although we ended up at the beach, we headed straight to the car to grab our chairs plus some snacks before actually spending a couple of hours people watching on the beach.
