Visiting the Spanish Missions of San Antonio

We finally made it to the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park which is only about 2 hours away from our home! Each of the five missions are located 2-3 miles apart. The most famous, The Alamo, is in downtown San Antonio. From there, Mission Concepcion (pictured) is about 3 miles south. Continuing south, you can find Mission San José, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada. All of the missions are managed by the National Park Service and can be toured in a single day.

Did you know there were other important Spanish Missions in the San Antonio area besides the famous Alamo?

We recently took a day on our return home from a camping trip to explore all of the missions. Mission Espada, Mission San Juan, Mission San Jose, Mission Concepcion and The Alamo are all situated along the San Antonio River. The river was a life-blood water source for the early settlers of the area. It was amazing to finally see these pre-American settlements in the United States.
