A visit to Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park is a great day trip for travelers exploring Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada. The park is home to six charcoal ovens that date back to the 1870s. Originally the ovens were used for mining silver ore that
was found nearby. In later years, travelers used the ovens as a shelter as they traveled across the state. (It is thought that stagecoach bandits may have even used the charcoal ovens as a hiding place!)

We learned about several nearby sites on a sign at Great Basin National Park. We didn't have the time to get to all of them, but we were intrigued by the description of Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park. The park was about an hour away and was the perfect way to wrap up our visit in the area!
