There is always a crowd watching the Evzones on duty in Athens. In order to be considered for the role of guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, candidates must be between 6' 2" and 6' 8" tall. Once chosen for the elite unit, soldiers must successfully complete five grueling weeks of training. While on duty, soldiers always wear a distinctive uniform and can be seen marching back and forth while simultaneously raising their perfectly straight legs up to the height of their soldiers.

I still remember our first time to visit Athens, Greece. It was a port day during a Mediterranean cruise back in 2001, and our first port to ever explore DIY style. One of the most memorable sights from our day was watching the Evzones as they guarded the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in Syntagma Square.

During our one day there this August, we made a point to stop to watch the Evzones again!

Fun fact: Evzones are not allowed to communicate in any way, shape or form while on guard duty. Only in an emergency and with proper notice can an accompanying soldier ask him a question. To answer, the Evzone can respond by blinking his eyes once, twice or three times (yes, no or I don't know).
