Don't Miss Learning the History Surrounding You

Like many schools with a similar name, Parkville, Missouri's Banneker School was named after Benjamin Banneker. Banneker was an 18th century African American astronomer, mathematician and scientist. The original schoolhouse was built in 1885 to help educate area children who, due to state law at the time, were prohibited from schooling with white children.

Social Media Description

Have you ever noticed a historical marker for the first time near a place that you frequent?

Earlier this year, we saw a marker not far from our home that we'd never previously noticed. And now, as many times as we have been in Parkville, MO staying with family, we've never noticed the historical marker at Banneker School. It's amazing how much we can learn by truly opening our eyes and really noticing what is around us!

What was the last "nearby" historical site that you noticed for the first time?
