Tail to Trunk: Fascinating Line of Giants Cross the Chobe

Known as the "Land of the Giants", Chobe National Park is home to the world's largest elephants. With the Chobe River as a plentiful water source, these Kalahari elephants are often at the river's edge in their family groups. You may see them drinking, playing, bathing or even crossing the river - especially during the park's driest months of May through October. Watching these giants wait for the perfect time to cross the Chobe River and then, one after another, trudging though the water with all of their weight is a highlight of any visit to the national park.

Social Media Description

As our afternoon cruise on the Chobe River was coming to an end, we began discussing the morning activity for our last full day in the national park. Our guide, Alec, mentioned that we could start a little later than normal and go out on the river again in hopes of seeing the elephants cross the river. So glad that we went with his recommendation!

During our several hours on the water, we saw many family groups stand on the river bank waiting for the perfect moment to cross. Once the time came, the lead elephant began crossing with the rest of the family lining up so that each tail was immediately followed by the next trunk. (I'd love to know what the babies were thinking as they crossed almost completely submerged!

Here's some still shots of one family's crossing ... we'll find a reel to post tomorrow!
