Fort Meade: Birthplace of the National Anthem

Just 5 miles from Sturgis, the Old Fort Meade Museum celebrates the 60+ years that Fort Meade served the United States as an Army post. During the Great Depression, Fort Meade was used as a base camp for members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Then, beginning in 1944 and continuing through the present, the fort has operated as a Veterans Administration Hospital.

Do you enjoy military history?

I've gotten more interested in history as I've gotten older (ugh) and had the opportunity to travel more. I've always had more interest in military history, so when I saw how close Ft. Meade was to Sturgis, I knew we had to make a visit.

In addition to touring the museum, we got a route map to guide us on a driving tour of the historic buildings of the fort. Before leaving, we also drove the short Fort Meade Back Country Byway and made stops at the Fort Meade National Cemetery and the newer Black Hills National Cemetery.

Fun fact: Beginning in 1892, the "Star Spangled Banner" was played at all Fort Meade military ceremonies, parades and concerts. Although it wasn't until 1931 that the song officially became the country's national anthem, it's journey started right here.
