Explore the Bricks and Barracks at Historic Fort Jefferson

A ferry ride aboard the Yankee Freedom transports guests to Dry Tortugas National Park. Upon arrival, a 45 - 60 minute guided tour of historic Fort Jefferson is available for all who are interested. The construction of Fort Jefferson began in 1846. Although never completed, the massive brick fortress was used as a prison during the Civil War.

What's the most interesting military fort that you've visited?

We are on a mission to visit as many as we can, and we are now at Dry Tortugas National Park. Getting to this park located off the coast of the Florida Keys is only accessible by boat or plane, but it's a park well worth the visit.

We rode the Yankee Freedom ferry to get here (about 2 1/2 hours one way) and started our visit with a tour of Fort Jefferson. The "naturalist" who led our tour did a great job of sharing the history of the fort in a fun way.

Fun fact: Fort Jefferson was equipped with 520 of the most advanced weapons available at the time, and none were ever fired in battle!

Do you enjoy learning military history?
