It is estimated that construction of the Great Pyramids of Giza began around 2550 BC. The first of the three primary pyramids was built as the royal tomb for King Khufu (Cheops). Later, the tombs for Kings Khafre (Chephren) and Menkaure (Mykerinos) were also built on the Giza Plateau. The pyramids are on the list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Also standing on the plateau are three smaller pyramids built for the queens and sisters of these ancient Egyptian rulers.

At the top of our "must see" list for our time in Cairo was the Great Pyramids of Giza. We arranged a private all day tour stopping first at the site where these amazing structures were built over 4,000 years ago.

Fun fact: The Great Pyramids are one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and the only one that still stands today.
