Following the Underground Steps of Iron Ore Miners

The Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park is home to the Soudan Mine, Minnesota's first iron ore mine. The mine was in operation from 1882 through 1962. U.S. Steel owned and operated the mine between 1901 and 1962 before donating the park to the state in 1965. Today, tours of the park allow visitors to travel 1/2 mile underground via a cage. A rail car then takes guests into the last area mined before closing. It's also interesting to know that the mine was used for sensitive physics experiments for a period of time in the 1980s.

Have you ever toured a mine?

Since leaving home nearly three months ago, we have had the chance to explore and learn about a coal mine and a copper mine. Northern Minnesota is home to what is referred to as the "Cadillac of Mines", so we didn't want to miss out.

Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park has lots to explore - both above and below ground. The surface tour is all self guided and includes the Crusher House and Engine House among many other buildings. The underground iron ore mining tour, which requires hard hats, is guided.
