Get a Monkey Fix at Jozani Forest

The only national park in Zanzibar, Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, is an easy half-day excursion from Stone Town. The park spans two sides of the entry road with tall trees flanking the road. One side of the park has a boardwalk with a mangrove area. The Red Colobus Monkey, an endangered species is native to Jozani Forest (as it is most frequently called). Although it's that species that draws most people to the park, there are plenty of flora and fauna to see - and even some blue monkeys!

What is your favorite animal?

I've always said that I wanted a pet monkey, so monkeys are near the top of my list! Once I read that there was a national park in Zanzibar that was famous for monkeys, I knew I had to pay it a visit. I was so happy when our guide, Aiysha (In Zanzibar by Aiysha) said that getting to Jozani Forest was an easy day trip.

The first five photos are of the Blue Monkey and the remaining are of the Red Colobus Monkey.

Fun fact: The word "Colobus" means "mutilated" - these monkey's have no thumbs!
