Located near the center of New Zealand's North Island is a city called Taupo. The city can be found on the northeastern shore of Lake Taupo, a freshwater lake which actually sits in the caldera of the Taupo Volcano. Taupo is just under four hours from Auckland, and is a perfect launching point for a variety of activities in the central part of the North Island.

What's your favorite ambiance for dinner?
We had meals at two different restaurants in Taupo right near Lake Taupo. We ate outdoors at one and indoors at the other, but both had great views. Our meals were excellent and reasonably priced (thank you Dixie Browns & Waterside Restaurant) plus we could people watch and see Lake Taupo and some of the city's famous sculptures!
