Mount Baldy Beach Trail: An Indiana Dunes Favorite

The sand dune known as Mount Baldy in the Indiana Dunes National Park is currently closed except for those on ranger-led hikes. A fun alternative is the Mount Baldy Beach Trail which starts at the same trailhead. The beach trail leads hikers around Mount Baldy where you have the choice of enjoying a lake view from above or making your way down the sand to the beach. Both are great rewards - just remember that you have to hike back up if you choose to spend time on the beach!

Do you enjoy more crowded or more secluded beaches?

For us, it depends on the day. There are times when we enjoy people watching, and other days when it is nice to just enjoy the sounds of the beach without the crowds.

Earlier this week, we met some other hikers who recommended the Mount Baldy Beach Trail. We are so glad that we decided to take the hike as it has been our favorite of Indiana Dunes National Park so far.

The hike starts with a climb up some stairs and then follows a mostly sandy trail around Mount Baldy. The views at the end of the trail of Lake Michigan are awesome. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make my down the sand to take a walk along the near empty beach. It turned out to be much easier than I thought, so Scott joined me. Fortunately, neither of us had a problem getting back up for the return hike to our car!

What is your favorite thing to do at the beach?
