A Ride on Sky Waka Brings You to Mt. Ruapehu

A 12 minute ride aboard a Sky Waka gondola in Tongariro National Park will bring you to Mt. Ruapehu. Enjoy panoramic views of waterfalls and ancient lava flows during your journey up. Your choices once you reach the top depend on the season. During the winter months when the mountain is covered in snow, ski atop the age old lava at either Whakapapa or Turoa. When the snow is gone, take a hike, dine or just take in the scenery from up high.

Which do you prefer - a summer gondola ride to a hiking spot or a winter gondola ride for skiing?

Since we aren't skiers, we'd have to choose the summer gondola ride. Although we didn't do a mountaintop hike this time, we did enjoy the views from atop Mt. Ruapehu in New Zealand's Tongariro National Park. Because of the fee, it makes the most sense to make use of your ride by doing some hiking or enjoying a meal as well.
