Tanzania | Arusha | Ngorongoro Conservation Area | Ngorongoro Crater | Crater Viewpoint | Caldera | Safari | Maasai Wanderings
According to estimates, the Ngorongoro Crater formed approximately 2-3 million years ago after a massive volcanic implosion. With its nearly 2,000 foot tall unbroken surrounding wall, it is the biggest volcanic caldera on earth that has not filled with water. Standing at the viewpoint, it's hard to believe that today the number of large mammals roaming in the caldera is in the tens of thousands.
